local authorities, investors, researchers and manufacturers from the
auto industry interested in the rapid and large-scale introduction of
electric vehicles in this region.
In the last part of the press
conference, Professor Dorin Lucache presented the main activities of
the pilot project AUTOMOTIVENETS focusing mainly on the PhD student
competition, whose final stage took place in mid-November in Trento,
Italy. As part of the event, participants from the Technical University
"Gheorghe Asachi" of Iasi in Romania were awarded prizes starting with
the Romanian competition winner Mr. Daniel Sticea that participated
with the project „Bidirectional DC-DC converter for energy sources
interface on hybrid electric vehicles”.
8th AUTOCLUSTERS
Project Meeting and 8th Study Visit in
AUTOCLUSTERS at Ljubljana, Slovenia, 28-20 November 2011
Automotive
cluster of Slovenia hosted 8th Autoclusters project meeting in the
capital of Slovenia – Ljubljana. Meeting took place from 28th - 29th
October 2011 in Hotel Mons.
During the two day meeting two
exchange study visits were organized. For the first partners were
invited to Hella Saturnus Slovenia –– producer for lighting technology
and electronics for the automotive industry. Mr. Christof Droste,
general director of Hella Saturnus Slovenia presented the company and
some interesting facts about company. Later on the project partners of
AUTOCLUSTERS had a chance to see the production facilities where
directors of marketing, quality, development and production departments
presented different processes in the company.
Furthermore the
second exchange study visit was being organized at the University of
Ljubljana - Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Faculty of Mechanical
Engineering presented their R&D capacities and experiences with
cooperation on numerous different projects with mainly large companies
from Slovenia and abroad. Partners have been invited to see the
laboratories as well as projects created and leaded by their students.
The soundest project presented was the car developed fully by the
students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from the base donated
by Peugeot.
First day of the meeting the international press
conference was being organized which was attended by important
representatives of public media, newspapers, radio as well as one
commercial TV. Press conference also confirmed its success by several
press releases in the upcoming days.
Project meeting
generally aimed at exchanging of the information between Project
Partners with the participation of other relevant stakeholders,
interest groups and beneficiaries. On the other hand project partners
discussed all project related issues, such as management and
coordination tasks, project activities and took decisions about the
ongoing activities in different work packages.
The International Congres CAR2011, 2-4 November 2011, Piteşti, Romania
From
2 to 4 November 2011 took place in Pitesti under the organization of
SIAR (Society of Automotive Engineers of Romania) and University of
Pitesti, the 10th edition of the International Congress of Automotive
CAR 2011.
Supported by leading sponsors such as Renault Technologie
Roumanie Dacia Pitesti, AVL, ACAROM (Association of Automotive
Manufacturers of Romania) and under the patronage of FISITA
(International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies) and EAEC
(European Cooperation Automotive Engineers), the congress added to the
traditional Automotive theme the one related to the interaction between
cars and the environment.
This year edition of CAR2011 Congress was
as in previous editions an opportunity for participants to gain a
professional view of current trends in the automotive industry, to
establish links with potential customers, suppliers, distributors,
researchers and identify future actions to develop this industry in
Romania and abroad.
CAR 2011 Congress has provided a wide range of
activities grouped in a plenary session, 25 oral sessions grouped on
various topics, 6 forums for debating hot topics in automotive, poster
sessions and an exhibition, hosted by Hotel Ramada of Pitesti and
University of Pitesti in the building of Faculty of Mechanics and
Technology.
Two AUTOCLUSTERS project representatives from Technical
University "Gheorghe Asachi" of Iasi, Assoc.Prof. Cristian-Gyozo Haba
and Prof. Dorin Lucache attended the CAR 2011 Congress. They presented
in the Multidisciplinary oral session the results of the pilot project
SEEE-Mobility. The presentation entitled „Actual Trends Towards
Electromobility in the South Eastern Europe” enjoyed a real interest
among the audience and other presenters given the fact that all work
presentation in this session were on issues relating to hybrid and
electric cars.

The
two members of the project have also participated in two of the
organized thematic forums. Mr. Haba attended the forum "Effective
Tripartite Collaboration - The Automotive Industry, Governments and
Academia Working Towards a Better Educational Experience" where during
the discussions presented the example of good practice developed within
the project AUTOCLUSTERS in the frame of the pilot project
AUTOMOTIVENETS during the international competition for PhD students
showing interests in automotive field. He made reference on how the
evaluation of the PhD students involved specialists in the automotive
industry and the perspective of future editions to provide internships
in companies in the field for the winners of the competition.

Mr.
Lucache participated in the forum "Future of Automotive Propulsion
Systems" where during the discussions he was able to further
disseminate the results of the pilot project SEEE-Mobility and also
attend the launch by a team of researchers from the University of
Pitesti, Romania, of the first hybrid car in Romania.

AUTOCLUSTERS at SIELMEN 2011 in Chisinau, Rep. of Moldova
Between 13 to 14 October 2011 two AUTOCLUSTERS project
team, members from „Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi,
Romania, prof. Cristian-Gyozo Haba and prof Dumitru Lucache, attended
SIELMEN 2011 Conference 2011 (The 8th International Conference on
Electromechanical and Power Systems) which was held in Chisinau,
Republic of Moldova. As an action within the AUTOCLUSTERS project they
have organized the Workshop on Actual Trends in the Electro-Mobility in
South Eastern Europe. In the first day the opening of the SIELMEN 2011
Conference gathered the participants in the Rector’s building of the
Technical University of Moldova in Chisinau. The speakers have
emphasized the long tradition of the SIELMEN Conference which every two
years brings together scientists and specialists in the field of
Electromechanics and Power Engineering in the East Europe to discuss
the latest developments in the field. Following the opening, the
participants visited the exhibition organized in the courtyard of the
Department of Power Engineering where, on one hand, the teachers and
researchers from Technical University of Moldova exposed their results
and on the other hand a number of companies from Moldova specialized in
the field of electromechanical and power engineering presented their
products and integration solutions.

In
discussions with both exhibitors and visitors, specialists in the area
of electromechanical and power engineering, AUTOCLUSTERS project team
members presented the up to date project results with greater emphasis
on the issues related to electro-mobility.

On
the second day of the conference was organized the Workshop on Actual
Trends in the Electro-Mobility in South Eastern Europe. In the first
part of the workshop there was presented the small pilot project
SEEE-Mobility, part of AUTOCLUSTERS WP7 with a strong focus on the
results of the electro-mobility study done in the South East Europe
project partner countries.

The
presentation was followed by discussions in which participants
expressed their views on the state of promotion of electric-mobility
and of electric vehicles in Eastern Europe. It was concluded that,
although there are important results of researchers from Romania and
Moldova in the development of improved performance electric motors and
related control systems (proved by papers presented during the
conference), their implementation in the field of automotive
applications is underdeveloped.
Auto Motor Show Bucharest and Accessories 2011. Failed Expectations
In
the period 5-9 October 2011 was organized in the premises of Romaero
hangars the Auto Motor Show Bucharest and Accessories (Salonul Auto
Bucuresti si Accesorii – SAB&A), not to be mistaken with previously
held International Auto Motor Show Bucharest (Salonul International
Auto Bucuresti – SIAR).
After the cancellation of SIAR and of
SAB&A in 2009 there was little hope that any of the two motor shows
will restart mainly taking into account the drop in car sales in
Romania and the uncertainty related to production start in Ford factory
in Craiova.
As SIAB 2011 was cancelled because of low interest for
participation from the car companies, the company Premium Expo has
tried to organize Romania SAB&A 2011, a show dedicated mainly to
dealers and resellers and less to car producers.
When you have
participated in Frankfurt Motor Show only two weeks before, you cannot
have great expectation from SAB&A, but the disappointment was
bigger then you could anticipate when entering the gates of the show.
Regrettably the disillusionment was from all points of view: location,
organization, exhibitors, models exposed and number of participants.

However,
the main purpose of my visit to SAB&A was to investigate the
presence of electro-mobility at the show, how the interest on electro
mobility is reflected in the organization of the show, how car dealers
are promoting either electric or hybrid cars on the Romanian market,
their awareness of government or local authorities initiatives in
introducing electric vehicles in Romania and of course to disseminate
the results of SEEE-Mobility and Autoclusters projects.
One says
numbers don’t lies and the reality that at SAB&A show was exposed
only one electric car, Mitshubishi iMiEV and two GPL-electric hybrids
(Hyundai Avante and KIA Forte) make obvious the fact that we will not
see electric cars on Romanian roads too soon but only if important
actions are taken at all decision levels and by all parties invoved.

I
could get only sales information about exhibited models, the
representatives saying they have no information about car producers’
strategies on introducing electric vehicles in Romania and that that
for the moment the demand for electric cars is insignificant.
I was
expecting to find at the show representatives of Renault which is one
of the important players in the Romanian car production as owner of
Dacia plant and one of the top ranked car sellers in Romania. Their
palette of electric models exhibited at Frankfurt Motor Show impressed
me and I wanted to ask them more information about their initiatives in
electro mobility in Romania. They were absent from the SAB&A show
instead, I found them the same day at the 2011 International Trade Fair
in Bucharest (Tārgul Internaţional Bucureşti – TIB). I tried as much as
I could to find news from the Renault representative about electro
mobility plans of the company but I only get evasive answers or claims
about the secrecy of company policy in this area.
In the premises of
TIB 2011 I could discuss more on electro-mobility than in the SAB&A
but the hopes for a quicker introduction of electric vehicles didn’t
rise too much.
In the discussion with a representative of
Electroprecizia, well known producer of electrical machines and
instrument panels for old model Dacia cars, I could find that the
company has no intention to enter into the market of electrical motors
for electrical vehicles.
Questioning a representative of Romanian
Association of Electricians (AREL) when discussing on the same topics
of electro mobility, I get the answer that there is no initiative to
develop training courses for the electricians who in future years will
assure the support and repair for electrical vehicles running on
Romanian roads. Installing wind turbines and solar panels seem to be
the only new skills demanded these days from electricians and there is
no demand related to electric vehicles.
At the Inventika fair
organized in the frame of TIB 2011, I could also found information
about the research done in ICPE research institute in Bucharest on
special electrical machines for electric vehicles. Different models
have been designed and tested on electric vehicle prototypes that were
demonstrated at different innovation and trade fairs.
Special highlights on e-mobility in Frankfurt Motorshow 2011
The
representatives of “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iaşi,
Romania, visited the 2011 edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show for
identifying the actual trends in electro mobility.

The
importance awarded to electro mobility by actual automotive industry
could not have been proved better than by organizing in the 22,000
square meters exhibition area of a special hall of Electro Mobility, a
special activity “Ecosystem Electromobility” and the Electric Mobility
Congress.
The two days allocated for this visit were barely enough
not only to see all new models demonstrated in the show but also to
path through all boots of companies involved in the effort o shaping
the electric future of tomorrow cars.
Though
a separate hall was dedicated to electric mobility, solutions and
innovations in this area were also present in all other halls of the
exhibition.
Some important car makers have chosen to exhibit their
electric mobility solutions not only in booths located in the special
hall but also in their main booths. Others have opted to concentrate
all their solutions in a single booth. From our point of view the
second choice was not always a good solution as the electric mobility
models and solutions were shadowed by the new conventional modules that
captured most of the attention of the participants. For the same
reasons it was difficult sometimes to find the most relevant and
accurate information from the exhibitor personnel because most of them
had no enough deep insight in the electric mobility technology.
As a
first impression we could see that every major car producer has
invested recently in the development of at least one electric vehicle
model. The introduction of electric cars must be done in an overall
context that includes also the development of the infrastructure:
energy production and storage, new materials and components,
communication and ICT management. In this respect most of electrical
vehicle producers were involved in partnerships with electrical energy
producers and distributors in order to offer the individual and public
charging infrastructure.
We could also learn that some companies are
also developing different business models in order to offer for their
clients the best electric mobility experience.
In presenting their
three EV models that are going to be introduce on the European market
next year, a Renault representative described the facilities the
company offers for its customers:
• leasing of the car battery for reducing considerably the acquisition cost of the electric car
•
EVs are aimed at this moment to be used mainly for the urban traffic.
For longer travels outside cities (business or holiday trips) the
company could offer to its customers a conventional car as part of a
subscription contract.
The Quickdrop system which doesn’t imply the
recharge of the battery but their rapid replacement in special charging
stations was also demonstrated in the Renault booth. It will remain for
the future to tell if this solution will be largely adopted or it will
be outclassed by the wireless recharging concept demonstrated by
Siemens and which is also the subject of an FP7 proposal elaborated by
our Bulgarian partners from the Autoclusters project.

Companies demonstrating electric mobility solutions at Frankfurt Motor Show could be grouped as follows:
• major car producers
• electric mobility solution integrators
• electric mobility component producers
• electric mobility infrastructure providers
• developers of electric mobility concepts.
The
EV models presented at Frankfurt Motor Show revealed that car producers
are developing and testing electric mobility solutions in all vehicle
range.
The big majority of models have been developed with typical
usage in urban areas. The limited autonomy range imposed by actual
technologies restricts the usage of EV on relatively short distances.
The high prices of batteries are also an important factor that
conducted most car producers to enter in the electric mobility market
with small models that can be afforded by people willing to test this
zero emission mobility.
In this category we can include the
following demonstrated models: Renault Twizy, Mitsubishi iMiEV, Citroen
C-Zero, Honda QEV, Mercedes E-cell, Peugeot iOn, Hyunday Blue On
Electric, Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, etc.

Nevertheless,
a group of models disposing of a range extender using either hybrid
technologies or supplementary batteries were also proposed. These
models are aimed at customers that are affording to buy a more
expensive car but also at administrations, organizations and companies
that operate large fleets of vehicles, mainly in urban areas (taxi,
courier services or maintenance companies to name just a few).
Models
like Renault Fluence, Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera, Volvo C30 Electric,
Fisker Karma, Artega and others are good candidates for satisfaying
these kind of demands.

Commercial
vehicles and minibuses for urban transport are also in the focus of
several car producers but also for EV solution integrators which are
betting on local communities’ determination to decrease levels of gas
emissions and noise in their area.
The development of EV can not be
possible without the implication of major car component producers,
especially those dealing with the electric part of the vehicles. The
visit at their booth could give you the image of electric products that
will be integrated in the next electric or classical vehicles with a
strong focus on reducing energy consumption.
We could see at
Siemens booth electrical motors, charging stations, inductive charging
systems, at Johnson Controls booth batteries, battery control and
battery monitoring electronic systems, at Jtekt booth electric power
steering systems, at Aisin booth hybrid car related products and at
Baumueller booth different types of electric drives for trucks. Other
charging station solutions were present at e-ON booth but also at RWE
one. We take a longer visit at Continental and Delphi booths as both
companies have subsidiaries in Romania and more important for us in
Iasi where they are developing a good relationship with the academic
environment. We could discuss about the electronic controls, electric
drives and safety systems which are also in our area of interest. A
full range of electric products that are designed for electric vehicles
we found at well known companies Bosch (electronics, drive systems) and
Valeo (electronics, drive systems, motors).

It
not an easy task to develop an electrical vehicle from the ground.
Therefore some companies have chosen the solution to take an already
existent chassis and accommodate necessary parts to build an electric
vehicle tailored to the client needs. Some of the most important EV
solution integrators we have visited at the Frankfurt Motor Show were
German e-cars that demonstrated models based on Opel chassis, Brabas
with models based on Smart and Mercedes chassis, Edag and Schaffler.

In
a busy town where access lanes are many times crowded even the small
electri cars will be slowed down and even blocked. Therefore, electric
bicycle or scooter can be a viable alternative for mobility for small
distances in urban areas. Well known bicyle producers but also car
producers are testing the market with innovative products. We noted
bicycles from Tante Paula, Peugeot (E-Vivacity, ae11), Elmoto and Honda
(EV-neo).

What
future will bring us in the area of electro-mobility was demonstrated
by the concept cars revealed at the motor show by well known car
producers like VW (Nils), Audi (Urban Concept), Renault (Fredzy and
Zoe) but also by other, less know by us, companies like EDAG, Dekra or
RIMAC Automobili (whose one electric car model we could test during the
Autoclusters Project meeting in Sibenik).

By
visiting the Frankfurt Motor Show we could better understand which is
the actual state of the art in the area of electro mobility and put our
analysis about the electro mobility infrastructure elaborated in the
frame of SEEE-Mobility project into a new perspective.
